.
Here we continue to examine just what is so great about this film.
If you haven’t already, read from the start.
.
RIGHT!
Now we are to THE ONE BAD MARK against this movie. This song is _TERRIBLE_. I can see that it’s there to give Sally Ann her big number, but the rest of us are bored to tears. It also serves to show that she fancies him, so it’s not _too_ ridiculous later on that they kiss and “have to get married” after a single day-out at the beach.
(remember, this is all in the ‘story’ being told…unless Caractacus retells the tale a number of times over a number of picnics -?)
Anyway, I always skip this scene and encourage you to do the same. It slows down the whole movie when it can least afford it -spoiling the pace and sending the audience to sleep.
.
“I’m off to Africa!”
.
“Not without my laboratory!”
.
“Ah -here IS your lavatory!”
.
Another scene, another colour-pallette change. Beige & Blacks this time.
.
Just look at that head-dress.
.
This little guy got a little carried-away.
.
There are no bright colours in the village with no children…
.
…except in the toymaker’s house.
Notice the costumes to the right & left that will be worn by the Professor and Ms. Scrumptious later on.
.
Caractacus and the Toymaker look over a wall toward the castle. A purple plant lies on the castle’s side.
We will see the extensive use of purple throughout the scenes in the castle.
.
“ICE CREAM!”
Look at the strange device that is the hand holding the sweets. I only recently noticed this myself -so mesmerising is the face and actions of The Childcatcher (Robert Helpmann).
I imagine it’s a device to help the sweets stick out at appropriate/well-positioned angles for the framing of the shot, but it’s still an odd looking thing once you notice it.
.
“…and ALL free today!”
.
The Childcatcher really does enjoy his work.
.
Look at the lighting and (again) the clothes & colour pallette. The Toymaker says these children are like rats and we didn’t need him to point that out -We can see it and believe it.
.
Now continue to (the final) part 4 of this THING.
